I told you that I disagree with the "blanket idea" that children will spontaneously read if correctly exposed to language-rich environments, and that we use Logic of English for our writing and reading curriculum. But why?

I was taught learning the "whole word" method. You've probably heard of, or seen walls covered with, sight words. This whole word method it an idea that English just has exceptions and needs memorizing. Whole Word reading instruction is not phonic based, but creates speedy readers. The problem I have with "whole word" or "sight words" is when students are asked to read unfamiliar words aloud, or when they come across new words and are taught to "guess based on context" which simply doesn't work for upper level text. Guessing just won't cut it for graduate level texts!
Children are far more easily able to learn the rules and logic of the english language at a young age, not as college juniors, or homeschooling mamas. I'm learning more than I ever expected, and you can too- Logic of English offers their training videos FREE on YouTube for parents and teachers.

The curriculum is easily found used online, the manipulatives are similar to Montessori's moveable alphabet and sandpaper letters (but we just use our Montessori materials to complete the LOE tasks). We also are writing in cursive, not print! Here is a great article which influenced our decision.
