What color is the end of winter?

The sun was shining on this cold and wintry day. I and a couple of the other moms had arrived a few minutes early. The city of Lilburn decided it was a great idea to work on multiple railroad tracks and crossings at the same time, therefore making traffic in the area a bit of a bear! I was up earlier this morning, so we could leave earlier. Thankfully, it all went according to plan.

The timer went off and it was time to get out the parachute. Msr. Ali and the kids shook it as hard as they could and down it came to rest on the ground- she passed out some green bags and M began to collect some tiny pieces of branches.

"The weather is changing, but it's still winter. We are nearing towards the end."

Mrs. Ali then asked "What color does the end of winter look like?"

"White, like snow" answered one of the kids. "Green snow" another child exclaimed!

"The bags are green too!"

What else is green? The leaves of the trees and the stems of the flowers.

Next, came the color tablets to examine the various shades of green.

"We are looking for green today", instructed Mrs. Ali.

We're going on a green hunt! What a beautiful day!

The kids wandered to collect all of their green. Various types of plants ended up in the bags.

I wandered and found dandelions and several other plants growing on a storm drain. Plants are smarter than we think!

Together we gathered all the green into bags- and began hammering! Some of the kids were stomping on the bags to "get the green out." We added water to the bags.

Shake, shake, shake the plants to make green juice!

Miss Ali had some pre-made pails of other colors : Turmeric root to make yellow juice, blackberries to make purple juice and beets to make red juice. Each of the children went around to their color stations and dipped their cloth banners into the pails and like magic, the colors saturated the cloth and dyed the banners with beautiful patterns.

(If you are looking for a great kids hammer, Mrs. Ali suggested the stubby hammer from Harbor Freight is perfect for little hands. Rubber mallets also work well.)
